Impact of Climate Change on the Conservation of Birds

Project highlights:

Project commenced-April 2009

BirdLife, Durham University and BNHS collaborative project on climate change in Asia

Funded by MacArthur Foundation

The largest climate change modelling project on birds in Asia till date

Project goal:

To assess the impact of climate change on  birds in the Eastern Himalaya and in particular to examine the ability of the Important Bird Areas network (including both protected and non-protected areas)

Project region:

Covers two of the MacArthurFoundation’s Geographic Priority regions

- Eastern Himalaya

- Lower Mekong

Methodology:

1. Distributional data for birds in India

2. Use current climatic variables to describe bird distribution –

    climate envelopes

3. Use future climatic variables to predict the  distribution of bird in future

4. Digital outlines of IBAs

5.Overlay IBA boundaries over distribution map of species
6. Develop measures to minimise impact of climate change
