Sálim Ali Bird Count

What: Nationwide bird count When: 15th November 2015

How:

(1) Go birding for at least 15 min (preferably longer);

(2) Make a separate list (with counts of birds) for each location covered;

(3) Upload your list(s) to eBird India.

Who: Anyone with an interest in birds! This is a great opportunity to introduce your family and friends to the wonderful world of birds.

Bombay Natural History Society announces the revival of Sálim Ali Bird Count in India. This is a single-day event to commemorate the birthday of the ‘Bird man of India’, late Dr. Sālim Ali (1896-1987). The date for this year’s Bird Count will be 15th November 2015, and will continue every year on the Sunday following 12 November, his birth anniversary. Birdwatchers are invited to participate in this event by watching birds wherever they like for at least 15 minutes, and preferably over an hour. Complete lists of all species seen (ideally with counts of individuals) may please be submitted on eBird (www.ebird.org/india) from where BNHS will download, analyse and circulate the findings.

We also encourage birdwatchers to use this opportunity to visit Important Bird Areas (IBAs) or other key habitats and sites near them. You can visit multiple locations during the day, but please maintain and upload a separate bird list (and count) for each location. If you visit the same locations every year on, the Sālim Ali Bird Count becomes a means for monitoring the status of birds and their habitats. Bird and natural history groups could also use this occasion to organize other events to popularize bird-watching among the general public.
